When fear grips you, it can be paralyzing or it can send you into a panic. Sometimes, however, it is you who grips the fear, not the other way around. When you hold onto it, you may become impossible to hold on to your dream. Either way, you don't have to let fear derail your purpose, goals or dreams. Here are five inner power tips to help you break through fear and reach your goal.

  1. Don't focus on your fear. Focus on getting to the other side
What's on the other side of your fear? Career success? A healthy relationship? Prosperity? Fear prevents many people from reaching out for what they want. As a result, they end up doing nothing significant or nothing at all to reach their goal. Overcoming fear is like walking across a high wire. Don't look down; it can upset your balance. Look straight ahead and stay focused on getting to the other side one step at a time.

  2. If you can't be courageous, be outrageous
It is said that courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the ability to move forward in spite of it. When you can't muster enough strength to be courageous, be outrageous instead. Do something out of character to break through your normal fears, limitations and inhibitions. Outrageousness reconditions the mind to think outside the box. A dramatic change in your appearance, speaking voice, or even the way you introduce yourself or enter a room can break you out of your fear. Have fun with it.

  3. You can't outrun your fears, but you can outgrow them
Avoiding fear or letting it run away with you only tightens fear's grip. It diminishes your ability to do what needs to be done. To break through fear, grow up. Focus on how to be responsible for yourself, for others, or for what happens next. This helps to change your perspective of what's happening and your relationship to the thing that you fear. Think of the moment as "your baby."  Take care of it.

  4. To release fear, be open
Fear is often self-judgment in disguise. These uneasy thoughts can make you "squirm," which may then manifest as fear, nervous behavior or physical illness among other things. To release fear, stop judging yourself.  Be fully present in the moment and be open to giving what the moment needs from you most.

  5. Turn your fear into a path of self-improvement
Where there is fear (or any negative emotion), there is an awakening waiting to happen. Fear can be a clear indicator of what you need to learn. What knowledge, skill or quality can you acquire that will allow you to be masterful rather than fearful? Pay close attention to your fear and let it be a guiding light on the path of self-improvement.
